Matthew Kievit
Co-Owner · Operations, Finance & Marketing
Matt’s path to landscape lighting started in restaurants. He worked his way up in New Jersey and Arizona, and eventually owned restaurants in both states. Running a restaurant teaches you what keeps people coming back: showing up consistently, paying attention to details, and making every guest feel looked after. It also taught Matt the business side, from sales to building a team and growing carefully.
He brought all of that to landscape lighting, a trade he learned in California.
Nearly a decade ago he started his own lighting company in Colorado and built a loyal group of clients there. When he decided to return to San Diego, leaving those clients without care wasn’t an option. Don Mulligan, a lighting designer and installer who shares Matt’s standards, now leads X Outdoor Lighting’s Colorado branch. He still looks after many of Matt’s original clients there.
Back in San Diego, Matt’s company became known to many homeowners as Dazzle. It later grew into X Outdoor Lighting, which Matt now runs with co-owner Elizabeth Leeds. You’ll usually find him on site, walking a property at dusk and working out how light can bring out the best of a home’s architecture and landscape.

Elizabeth spent 25 years in physical therapy before joining X Outdoor Lighting. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy and clinical director, she specialized in orthopedics and pelvic floor rehabilitation.
That work showed her what it means for a client to feel truly cared for. They understand what’s happening, what comes next, and why it matters, and someone follows through long after the first visit. She brings that same approach to X Outdoor Lighting.
Today Elizabeth oversees operations, finance, and marketing at XOL. She builds the systems behind each project, from how a design is presented to how clients hear from us after installation, and she keeps communication clear and consistent. She runs X Outdoor Lighting with co-owner Matt Kievit.

Don Muligan

Don came to landscape lighting with decades of photography behind him. A photographer spends a career studying light: how it falls across a surface, how shadows add depth, and how the right amount in the right place turns an ordinary view into something worth looking at. Don brings that same eye to every home he lights.
He’s also always looking for what’s new. Don seeks out new lighting products and technologies and brings the ones that truly hold up into his designs, so his clients get both a thoughtful design and dependable equipment.
Don leads X Outdoor Lighting’s Colorado branch. He works closely with a smaller group of clients, many of whom first worked with Matt Kievit, and he shares the same commitment to personal design and continued care.
